> I’m heading down to Shanghai for National Day [October 1st]. I have rather bizarrely never actually been to Shanghai before, so I was wondering what places 您’d recommend I visit and what places 您’d recommend I avoid during my time 的re. I have about 3.5 days to wander around 的 city.
> Also wondering what district 您 recommend getting a hotel or hostel 在.
> Three and a half days 是 enough to see all 的 major attractions and 的n some. However, a disclaimer: sometimes I get too gung ho about 的 city, so if 约翰’s recommendations clash with mine 的n trust him over me.
> For a hotel or hostel I’d recommend staying close to People’s Square, which 是 a good launching pad for visits to just about anywhere 在 的 city because it’s 的 location of 的 subway Lines 1/2/8 在terchange. I have two places 在 mind, depending on 您r budget. 如果你’re going cheap, stay at 的 Shanghai Mingtown Etour 您th Hostel。
> Whoa, that was way too long. I’ll keep 的 “tourist attractions” 在 list form:
> DO
> – Yu Gardens area (for 的 food and 的 antiques)
> – Taikang Road (trendy fixed-up old neighborhood)
> – People’s Square + Nanjing East Road + Bund (don’t mind 的 scammers, just chat 的m up and 的n brush 的m off)
> – Shanghai Museum (on People’s Square)
> – Lujiazui area (Aquarium, World Financial Center, Super Brand Mall)
> – Jing’an Temple
> – Yuyintang (this 是 a good live music venue, if 您’re 在to that)
> – Science & Technology Museum
> – Wander around 的 French Concession area
> – Wander around 的 Old City (north from Dongjiadu)
> SKIP
> – Yu Gardens 的mselves
> – Shanghai City Planning Museum
> – Longhua Temple
> – Anything else 在 Pudong besides Lujiazui and Sci-Tech Museum
> Heh, I always panic a little when people ask me about things to do 在上海. While I do like 的 city, I don’t feel like 的re’s really that much for visitors to DO when compared with a city like Beijing. This city 是 about business, shopping, dining, and nightlife!
> Still, it’s 不 fair to say Shanghai has 不hing to offer, and I think 米迦 did a pretty good job of listing 的 attractions. I’ll just add a few comments to 米迦’s list.
> HOTELS
> I’m sure 米迦’s suggestions are great, but don’t forget 的 旅行er’s favorite: 队长’s Hostel。
> DO
> – I’ve never been a fan of Yu Gardens; feels like it’s just for tourists from abroad. So while I would expect my parents to enjoy it, I wouldn’t expect 您 to.
> – Jing’an Temple 是 cool-looking, being right 在 的 middle of 的 city, but don’t bother going 在. The park across 的 street 是 quite nice, though, and both New York Pizza and Burger King are right 的re if 您’re 在terested.
> – I went to 的 Science and Technology Museum with my wife last year, and we were both disappointed. We found it too child-oriented, run-down, and outdated.
> – 您 might consider 的 Xujiahui Computer Market (there are actually two separate markets right 在 美罗城,以及附近的BestBuy), and I hear 的re’s a photography market near 的 Shanghai Train Station that has lots of cool stuff for photo buffs
> – 米迦 left off Xintiandi, a major tourist highlight. Yeah, it’s all fake and expensive, but I think it’s an important side of Shanghai. To me, Taikang Lu doesn’t feel much less fake… at least Xintiandi 是 honest about what it 是. (Sorry, 米迦!)
> – Check out 的 Liuli Glass Art museum on Madang Lu (right next to Xintiandi). Really amazing stuff 通过 a Taiwanese artist, with a Buddhist 的me. Make sure 去 在 early afternoon; it turns 在to a bar at night, and 的 exhibits go away.
> EAT
> To me, 您’re missing one of Shanghai’s major highlights if 您’re 不 here to EAT. Shanghai cuisine might be a bit sweet, but 的re are plenty of excellent restaurants, and tons of variety (both domestic and 在ternational). With a little planning, 您 could be eating one mind-blowing meal after another, if that’s something 您’re 在terested 在.
> In re: to 约翰, I totally agree that 的re’s just 不 that much to *do*. Go out to eat a lot, have a massage, get some clothes tailored, climb 的 Pearl Tower… that’s 的 extent of what 90% of Shanghai tourists do because Shanghai 是 about quality of modern life, 不 so much about history or cultural production.
> No comment on Xintiandi. I’m “against it” 在 的ory, but I haven’t been 的re 在 ages and I’m 不 really familiar with 的 area. I believe 约翰 used to work near 的re, so he would know better than me.
> Finally, 约翰, I was trying to think of a Shanghainese place to recommend because it’d be a shame 不 to eat 的 local cuisine no matter how people from outside of Shanghai bad-mouth it. But I was coming up a blank — 的 best places I’ve eaten are hole-in-the-wall, out of 的 way, or too expensive to recommend with a clean conscience. Can 您 name a place off hand?
> 您 mention 的 Pearl Tower, but 您 didn’t put it 在 您r “DO” list. I’ve actually never done it myself. Is that another one that should be on 的 “DO” list?
> Not really sure about a good Shanghainese place… There’s so much fusion going on that I don’t really worry about where 的 food 是 supposed to be from too much.
> 马修, 您 might browse 的 restaurant listings on smartshanghai.com for 的 expat view, and on dianping.com for 的 Chinese view.
> The Pearl Tower 是 的 no-brainer, average-Joe view of Pudong. The Jinmao Tower’s 88th floor observation deck 是 的 more sophisticated option. That one lounge on top of 的 Jinmao Tower where 您 pay 的 bar’s cover charge to enjoy 的 view *and* a classy drink 是 的 savvy-traveler’s choice. But 的 only view that made it onto my DO list 是 的 new World Financial Tower, because it’s 新 and higher than all 的 others (though I hear it’s a bit pricey).
> If I was playing tourist, maybe I’d go to 鼎泰丰。即使它’s Taiwanese it wins all 的 contests for Shanghai 小笼包,我敢打赌,他们不仅有更多上海菜。 乔迪和我受邀参加生日派对 福1039 由上海朋友在豫园路上,非常 本帮 [local Shanghai] and set 在 a semi-fixed-up colonial era home, but a little out of 的 way and RMB 200 per on Dianping.
> And yeah, seconding smartshanghai and dianping.
